Transporting cargo in transport containers is one of the most efficient and common ways of transporting cargo. Container shipping is particularly efficient because containers can easily be stacked on top of each other and can be transferred from one mode of transportation to another. It is for a reason that the majority of goods and products that need to be transported internationally are shipped in this manner.
Shipping containers are large metal containers that can be filled with cargo either at a harbour or beforehand. These containers are then transferred onto a vessel usually with a crane to be shipped to the desired location. Making sure that the company you ship with is reputable is of course of great importance as you want to make sure that the containers used are of sound quality. Transport containers come in different shapes and sizes. We can distinguish between three categories of containers: dry, refrigerated and containers with special dimensions.
Dry transport containers are containers that do not have any built-in temperature controls. The majority of containers are dry containers. Dry containers come in different sizes, the 20-foot and the 40-foot ‘dry van’ are among the most common container sizes. The 20-foot containers are great for transporting heavier and dense loads because they can handle a lot of weight, while the 40-foot containers are better for carrying cargo which takes up a lot of space rather than being heavy.
Refrigerated containers, also called reefer containers, are useful when transporting perishable goods or goods and products that are sensitive to temperature changes. Refrigerated transport containers are often used when transporting goods such as flowers, medicine, fruit, meat or dairy.
The last category of transport containers is containers that accommodate oddly sized or special cargo. These containers include containers like an open top container for cargo that does not fit through a container door. Or a tank container which is used to transport liquids, powders or gasses.
